Australian Sign Language (Auslan) is one of the most widely used languages in Australia and is recognised as a preferred language of the Deaf communities. Auslan was added to the national curriculum in 2006 that resulted in our beautiful language being rolled out in schools across Australia to provide increasing and exciting opportunities for students to learn Auslan.

Many schools and kindergartens are shunning traditional languages such as Indonesian and Japanese in favour of learning Auslan. The language is not only relevant to the country the students are in but teaches empathy and understanding of deaf people in Australia.

As a visual language, Auslan is a perfect candidate as a LOTE subject in that it will help to enhance students’ learning process with visual, auditory and kinesthetic aspects which will ensure teachers engage their students actively and provide students with many benefits – to improve their memory, problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, enhanced concentration, ability to multitask and better listening skills.

At The Auslan Company, we created an Auslan LOTE curriculum suitable for schools or teachers to purchase to aid with their teaching of Auslan LOTE in schools

Our Auslan LOTE curriculum is suitable for all levels – Foundation/Prep to Grade 6.
